Family Home Evening - Compassion

Last night we had to cut our family night in half (finishing this morning) because Sophie's swimmer's ear was acting up. But it still was fun. so here is the lesson:
Opening hymn: Love One Another
Story: Any story which talks about compassion. I used one from The Children's Book of Virtues compiled by William J. Bennett called "Little Sunshine".
Lesson: Another word for compassion is Charity. We can love people in our hearts, but when we show them we love them, we are doing what God wants us to do. We are keeping his first and second great commandments to love God and then love our neighbors (this includes our family members).
Scripture: Moroni 7:44-47 (charity def'n).
Craft: Make heart ornaments using Perler beads. Attach magnets on the backs. When you see someone showing compassion to another person, put their magnet up on the fridge. Discuss what they did at dinner (if you are able to have a sit down dinner...good luck!)
Snack: We did cinnamon rolls this morning for breakfast because little Sophie's poor ear.

Cinnamon Rolls (Jen's recipe)
In a large mixing bowl, mix 2 cups warm water and 2 1/4 tsp. yeast. When yeast is dissolved, add 1 cup leftover mashed potatoes, or 1 cup instant mashed potato flakes mixed with 2/3 cup boiling water, 1/2 cup wheat germ, 1/2 cup sugar, 1 T. lemon juice, 2 tsp. salt, 1/4 tsp. turmeric. Mix in 5 cups flour. Knead well for 5-10 minutes, using as little flour as possible (you want sticky dough). Place in a greased bowl, and rise overnight in the fridge. Roll out on a floured surface into a large, thin rectangle. Brush with butter. Sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon. Roll up and slice into 1 inch rolls. Bake on greased cookie sheets at 350 for 15-20 minutes.
